Kitty Hawk Museum? - The carrier Kitty Hawk hasn't even left the fleet, but at least one plan is underway to give the ship a home in retirement. County commissioners in New Hanover County, N.C., voted unanimously Oct. 15 to approve a plan to acquire the Kitty Hawk, scheduled for decommissioning in 2008, and remake it in to a museum ship similar to the carriers Intrepid or Yorktown, the Wilmington N,C. Star News reported. A group of local boosters sought the green light to begin the bureaucratic process needed to acquire the Kitty Hawk, which includes setting aside land in the Wilmington area - home to a museum that features the World War 11 era battleship North Carolina and raising an estimated $7 million to tow the Kitty Hawk from the West Coast, where the ship is to be decommissioned. One major challenge, according to the newspaper report, is that the carrier is to big to fit under a bridge in the city, meaning organizers, have to find a site away from the cities downtown.
